Nous Round-up: Alber Elbaz Leaves Lanvin; Vogue's Sarah Mower on the souls of dearly departed designers

Post-Simons' Departure at DIOR, the fashion industry is digesting anew the latest move in Designers Musical Chair as Alber Elbaz leaves LANVIN, just a week after accepting the ‘Superstar’ award at Fashion Group International's Night of Stars in New York.

Hours before the said news broke, VOGUE editor Sarah Mower, in time for Halloween, reflects on the ghosts of storied fashion houses ( The Haunted Houses of Fashion: What Does It Mean to Conjure the Spirits of Departed Designers Now? ) and in another story, on the legacy (so far) of Elbaz ( Alber Elbaz Was Pushed Out at Lanvin; Vogue’s Sarah Mower Reflects on His Legacy )

More surprisingly, Elbaz happens to own a stake in the privately held company, the majority is controlled by Taiwanese publishing magnate Shaw-Lan Wang.

Again, Dior's top creative post has been recently vacated.

IT Girl: Yaya Dub in #AldubYouPreview

It's here! Preview has revealed its November 2015 cover, featuring Yaya Dub and *surprise-surprise* Alden Richards.

Apparently, the not one but two -cover special has been made possible out of "amazing photo-editing" as it was shot way before 'Tamang Panahon' which took place just last Saturday -- can we dedma the photoshop issue and be happy na lang?
Preview writes on Facebook,

"How do you bring together two people that cannot meet? Perfect planning and meticulous photo editing fulfill this fashion fantasy. Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza wear the hottest designer fashion on our November 2015 cover."

Our keen eyes were right as "Maine wears head-to-toe Gucci Cruise 2016."

This is one Preview issue that will certainly be a collectible.

CHANEL to showcase Cruise 2017 in Cuba

Just in time when Chanel's airport-themed clothes and international travel-inspired pieces have hit stores, the lucky showgoers, from editors to buyers, (we wouldn't mind this obligation of summertime travel) will be well-equipped as they'll get coasted to Havana, the capital of Cuba.

Karl Lagerfeld and Co. has been known for circling the globe, having hosted in the last two years Chanel Cruise and Metiers d'Arts shows in Seoul, Salzburg, Dubai and Dallas (with Rome on the docket for December). According to the press release from the mega-brand, Lagerfeld had his all eyes (and ears probably) into the whole "cultural richness and opening up of Cuba."

Since U.S. travel sanctions to Cuba were lifted (after 50 years of severed relations) earlier this year, Havana

As big-name brands have been trying to one-up each other every year, it's crystallizing that Latin America  -- LV is reportedly Brazil-bound in May -- is 2017's favored far-flung Resort destination.

Raf Simons Departs DIOR

A round-up of commentary from top fashion critics:
Hearing today that Raf Simons has resigned from Christian Dior stopped me in my tracks, as it did everyone else. But in one sense, I’m not surprised, and in another, I’m impressed. The news threw me back to the startling honesty of something Simons told me the day after his wildly lauded first couture show in 2012: “I’ll stop if I have no ideas anymore,” he said. “Fashion is not the only thing that can make me happy.”
I can’t say whether Simons’s decision to leave three and a half years later is directly related to feeling that he’s run out of ideas for Dior. He cites “personal reasons” in the official press release.
Sarah Mower. Sarah Mower Asks: What Does Raf Simons’s Dior Departure Mean for Fashion?

Still, it doesn’t seem that surprising. Fashion moves so quickly now. Who, besides perhaps Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, settles in and retires from a house anymore?
Who settles in and retires from any job anymore?
...
How cute is Raf Simons at @Dior in artist Sterling Ruby bleached shirt?! I can’t. #PFW #PFWSS16
The spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection that Simons showed earlier this month turned out to be his last for the house. He presented that collection in a multistory space seemingly carved from a mountain of flowers in the courtyard of the Louvre. It was not a collection that paid homage to the history of Dior. And it was not the work of an indulgent designer. It was a nod toward the future — a questioning of it. Is there a place for restrained, calm and simple beauty?

In many ways, the setting echoed that of Simons’ debut show for the house, the haute couture collection he presented in July 2012. The preparation for that show was chronicled in the documentary “Dior and I,” which explored his dazzling decision to line each room of a grand mansion with walls of fresh flowers. The aroma of the flowers was intoxicating. The experience was transporting. The clothes signaled an auspicious beginning.

But Simons was frustrated by the lack of time to create. For his debut show, in July 2012, he had eight weeks to prepare, but that was soon cut in half, given other demands on his schedule. That was okay, he told me a few months ago during an interview for System magazine that will appear in early November, because Dior’s workrooms and their network of suppliers could turn things out at amazing speed. But as he said then, “When you do six shows a year, there’s not enough time for the whole process.
Technically, yes — the people who make the samples, do the stitching, they can do it. But you have no incubation time for ideas, and incubation time is very important. When you try an idea, you look at it and think, Hmm, let’s put it away for a week and think about it later. But that’s never possible when you have only one team working on all the collections.”

Luca Solca, head of global luxury goods analysis at Exane BNP Paribas, pointed to the example of Hedi Slimane at the rival brand Saint Laurent, a designer known for not simply making the clothes for the brand but also for photographing the ad campaigns and creating the furniture in the stores as the new paradigm for many peers. “It seems to me many people are looking at Saint Laurent in awe,” Mr. Solca said. “The bar has become very high for creative directors to emulate that.”
Mr. Simons, who is Belgian and trained as an industrial designer before starting his men’s wear brand in 1995, joined Christian Dior in 2012 after six years as creative director at Jil Sander, his first women’s wear job. Though he maintained his men’s wear brand throughout his time at both Sander and Dior, analysts estimate it has annual revenues under €10 million.
Speculation now centers on who will be named the next Dior creative director, and a search has just begun. Though the brand declined to set a time frame for its choice, there is some urgency because the luxury industry as a whole is suffering from slowing sales and a challenging global consumer climate, and a house without a creative identity is at risk.

And so, in the world of pretty and ugly-chic fashion, the search is on, anew.

We Need To Talk About ANTM (and then Nyle)

After 12 years and 22 cycles, America's Next Top Model will take its finale walk, this season being its last. Former top model and the show's host/executive producer Tyra Banks, herself, on Wednesday took an announcement to Instagram via a 'Tyra Mail':
TYRA MAIL! Thinking #ANTM #cycle22 should be our last cycle. Yeah, I truly believe it's time. Our diehard fans know we've expanded the definition of beauty, presented what Flawsome is, tooched and booched and boom boom boomed, shown the world how to show their neck, rocked couture/catalogue/commercial poses, have found our (and your) light, strutted countless runways, gone on tons of go-sees, added guys to the girls mix, and have traveled around the globe and back again. Yeah, it's time. It really is. Wow, I am SO proud of what Top Model has done. #ANTM brought the intimidating modeling world to the masses. We were the first reality show based in the fashion world. I never thought my little idea would have people everywhere thinking differently about how they take photos. And I never thought we'd do 22 cycles. Whoa! So many!!! And what rhymes with 22? You. And you and you and you and you! YOU made Top Model what it is. We are a global force that has so many international versions around the world because of YOU! That's amazing and beyond anything that I ever dreamed. I set out to create a show where Perfect is Boring. So I hope you continue to love your freckles, your moles, your big forehead, your big eyes, your small eyes, your pointy chin, your tiny boobs, your full chest, your ivory or ebony skin (or every color in between) - the stuff about you that makes you well...you. And I hope you've learned a heck of a lot from watching. I have an inkling you have. May your photos (and selfies) be forever fierce. May you always find your light. And may you werk hallways like runways. Always remember, you are beautiful & BOOTYful. And please, keep on Smizing each and every day for TyTy. Fierce & Love, 💛Tyra

Feels like seeing a tween today, and whoosh next day it's 'hey, I'm an adult now.' So much memories!

My first brush was what I can vividly remember was a runway show with contestants doing the Jesus Christ -- walking down a water-laden runway. Turned out to be the finale in South Africa won by Naima Mora.

What would I soon witness was cycle (meaning 'season' in the ANTM dictionary) after cycle of not just catty cat-fights between and among girls (guys were allowed to join on Cycle 20 and pure drooling once a week ever since) or between judges (remember Janice Dickenson?), but also of a whole spectrum of fashion, beauty and culture:

  • photo shoots (I once saw a feature about magazine editorials taking pages out of the ANTM book)
  • turning so-called flaws (from height to size) to one's individuality -- *flawsome, baby
  • makeovers -- later branded as Ty-Over, a Tyra Makeover
  • vocabulary (Fierce had been going out on every girls and gays' mouth; Smize = smile with you eyes)
  • destinations (from Barcelona, España to Bali, Indonesia).

***

To divert this sadness,

here's Nyle (DiMarco).

He's one of the contestants in ANTM's Cycle 22.

Your Children Will Be Taught That Nyle From "America's Next Top Model" Is The Hottest Man Ever

The show is already half-way through its run and he's still there and we can't get enough of N-aaaahh-yle.

It's not safe for werq to say he's an obsession and object of fantasy.

Like, if you're into that, or whatever.

As Tyra says a lot this season, Boom
