Louis Vuitton Will Stage its Resort 2017 Show in Rio's UFO-like Niteroi Museum

Dismissing cancellation rumors due to Zika virus scare, Nicolas Ghesquiere lifted the location mystery in Rio de Janeiro where the Louis Vuitton's Cruise collection will be showcased -- via Instagram, of course.

Surpresa: I am correct!

As for the location? My Madame Auring crystal ball fearless prediction

(and you read it first here): The Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum. If you've been following @nicolasghesquiereofficial (a sci-fi geek who likes holidazing on island destinations), you already how this could be THE venue.

This follows the now-norm of big-name brands to opt for destination runway shows.

Cannot wait for more -- imagine the cultural experience and naturally the thematic clothes and accessories (and the enormous cash flow that will go with this outreach). Any fashion insider or observer would want to get sucked up into LV's dazzling vortex, wouldn't you and me?

On his way to St. Barths, NG + LV has unveiled their latest casting coup:

Are we seeing a fan (deviant) ort?

Da who?

Answers:

No, it izz realz.

The character's name is Lightning, of video game Final Fantasy XIII.

LOUIS VUITTON has collaborated with Square Enix artist and designer Tetsuya Nomura to make the virtual heroine model clothing and accessories from LV's Spring-Summer 2016 collection

The overlap between Final Fantasy XIII fans and people who splash out on Louis Vuitton handbags might be a slim one, but modern marketing is all about exploiting those profitable niches.

He said of his collection presented last October:
I was thinking about this digital frontier, which I wanted to combine in harmony with the world of Louis Vuitton – the craft, the wardrobe. It’s an evocation of cyber, of what comes from digital – these characters or girls that are speaking to their generation.

LV's Series 4 campaign casting is killing it -- the latest name to pop in the womenswear Spring-Summer 2016 ad is young Hollywood actor Jaden Smith.
It is already 2016 indeed!

For 2015, indeed, it is all about location, location, location. VOGUE's Sarah Mower reflects:
At some of its frontiers, fashion show production has melted into something more like a movie or theater production—a closer and closer parallel now that actresses are fully involved at every turn in the publicity, except for taking actual turns on the runway. This is fashion as spectacle, for spectators rather than shoppers, entertainment on a grand, broadcast scale. There are franchise wars between fashion conglomerates, just like franchise wars between movie brands. Competition between the big houses—the drive to outdo one another, to up the ante and stand out from the next brand—is the drug that has been causing this year’s extravagant spate of fashion “tripping.”
In exciting 2016, as Louis Vuitton will brave Brazil, Chanel will be heading to Cuba, and Gucci will go to kooky London. It's the beginning of something.

(Update: Chanel is to kick off the 2016's 'Traveling Resort Showcase' in Havana, Cuba on May 3; whilst Gucci has slated its London showing on June 2 -- Max Mara chose to show in London too -- closely following LV's cruise in Rio.)

LV is synonymous with the idea of adventure hence where NG will pioneer us into has been full of anticipation.

In other 'timely' news: The 2016 Met Exhibition and Opening Gala Theme has been announced: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” The show will “explore the impact of new technology on fashion and how designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear,” according to a museum statement. “Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made, but recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other,” said The Met's Costume Institute’s curator Andrew Bolton, who was recently just appointed to his role.

Nicolas Ghesquiere, who was quoted saying,

“We are all living with this new dimension. We are all managing how to integrate these new notions of digital, virtual, and cyber with our real life,"
will join Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada (RELATED:  Is Miuccia Prada the most powerful and influential designer in fashion?as honorary chairs in the exhibition debuting on May 2, 2016 with a gala, the Fashion Oscars, that will be hosted by co-chairs (the brooding) actor Idris Elba,

NG Appreciation Post

For today's Wayback Wednesday, here's a post from my previous ~blog~:

I said it in the previous post. What I wrote there can be translated to: I have found a greater admiration for new Artistic Director of women's collection of Louis Vuitton.

We know Nicolas Ghesquière and his highly-technical works but let me talk about his good looks.

He used to look dorky as per my perusal in Style.com of his photos circa early 00's. Dorky but cute anyway.

Fast forward to the last seven years, the fashion darling's overall look has seen better days:

You cannot not be disenchanted by the fashionable stubble

Even his cartoon self (from the  2012 Disney animated short Electric Holiday) is adorkable

No, I'm not actually describing Nicholas Hoult. I digress.

We bet you are going to look again at those close-up photos for what Agnès B. (whose studio gave him his first break as an intern) describes in the latest magazine feature about Mr. Ghesquière, this time penned Ingrid Sischy for Vanity Fair:

“I remember his face. His eyes are strong and clear. There are the eyes and there is the look—le regard. His has something in common with Montgomery Clift."

I think she's talking more about Clift's lips.

Segue: Lolo was hot

Other trove of photos will prove you I'm right about what I'm talking about.

Back to the business of fas-yown: with the LV template of artisinal heritage + NG with his intellect and technical knowledge, this condensation to propel the luxury conglomerate's flagship brand to a whole new relevance (the debut collection of casual-luxe and youthful sportswear is refreshing) will be exciting to observe. And so will be NG's visibility. Please, Nicolas, 'wag mo masyadong i-peg ang pagiging press-shy ni Phoebe Philo. Kthnks.

New crush alert! Nics, try to look less serious (read: smile a lot, to look younger).
Happy Man. Nicolas Ghesquiere after Louis Vuitton show. Chouchou. #pinpfw #pfw

P.S. My LV dream has been revived. I wanna work for LV.

Louis Vuitton becomes Balenciaga; Balenciaga becomes Vetements/Louis Vuitton/Margiela

It's been a week since fashion month came to an end. It's overwhelming enough -- loads of individualism. It's chock-full of jelly beans (or gummy bears or pochi) to digest. In particular, the most delicious was served during the last feast day (naturell'ment!).

Kering (parent conglomerate of Gucci, Saint Laurent, et al) announced the appointment of Demna Gvasalia, the main man of toast-of-the-town up-and-coming Margielaic label VETEMENTS, as Alexander Wang's replacement at Balenciaga. This was hours before the closing day of the Paris Collections that would kicked off with Louis Vuitton. The LV women's collections, after all, is now artistically-helmed by Balenciaga's reinventionist, its former designer for 15 years, Nicolas Ghesquiere.

Crushie! Via
Incidentally, Mr. Gvasalia has worked for LV during both the tenure of Marc Jacobs and Mr. Ghesquiere.

(But) LOUIS VUITTON ain't rattled af, duh!; Nicolas Ghesquiere's show for LV gets solid high marks on the list of best collections from the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris.

While his A/W 2014 brilliant LV debut
lv

(albeit subtle for his stunning reputation) of stripped back "art of wardrobing" done in masterful Seventies savoir-faire had

"sent ripples through fashion that are registering this season with an industry-spanning 1970s revival," as observed by Nicole Phelps formerly of Style.com),

Nicolas's latest spectacle has been lauded as a return to his true form as one multi-dimensional designer -- and product category smasher.

Initial reaction:

It was my first this season to watch any live feed, which got buggy as usual (what to expect from having the worst broadband connection in Southeast Asia!)
  • So many screens! Visual smorgasboard!
  • Sailor Mood headband on Fernanda (the pink-haired obvs)!
  • Nicolas finally unleashes his inner otaku
  • As the show progresses, audience members are either Instagram clicky-clicky or watching sluggish-ly (why? for what turned out to be the most fantasy-tic this fashion month?).
  • Sure thing: Vuitton is wont to take off its loyal customers to an awe-inspiringly virtual journey.
I will have to re-watch.

The devil is in the details:

The recent showcase assembles terrific looks born as commentary to digitization and technology.

Yet, mere mortals like me will not appreciate the couture-like works done on every (amounting to hundred or so) wearable, luxurious pieces by simply watching the show video and browsing the runway looks (Alas, we miss the light airiness of trolling Style.com). Thank your god for the 'Details' section which shows that this is capital Fashion for a reason.

There are many cool fashions in this collection but I can’t enumerate them all in this post. To sum up, expect a chica-fied virtual avatars, among other tribes, to walk the Earth come Spring/Summer next year! (RELATED Reading: ".. it was all about fashion tribes — one for each designer, each one with its inescapable dos and don'ts — and not just because wild hints of primeval shapes and robust whiffs of raw exoticism recurred as significant style tropes in collections" - Angelo Flaccavento. When in Paris, Choose Your Tribe. Business of Fashion.)

P.S. WWD informed that the likely next stop of the Louis Vuitton Cruise Collection is the 2016 Summer Olympics host city, Rio, Brazil. The fashion resource separately reports that NG collaborator set designer Es Devlin incidentally "will be working on a project of an even bigger scale: the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro." As for the location? My Madame Auring crystal ball fearless prediction

(and you read it first here): The Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum. If you've been following @nicolasghesquiereofficial (a sci-fi geek who likes holidazing on island destinations), you already how this could be THE venue.

The landmark was architected by Brazilian modernist Oscar Niemeyer.

Still saving for this namesake bag

Uhm, still figuring out how to save for this particular namesake branded bag.

Question: If you can have a murse christened after a celebrity, what would it be?

Answer: No hard-thinking anything, Louis Vuitton's SC bag (naturalmente)!

Not only is it named after the film-maker, Sofia Coppola herself teamed up with LV in 2010 and came up with a  duffel-shape bag  that bears her initials.

Since it's Throwback Thursday (hey!), here's my draft in one of my many ~blogs~ from a couple of years ago:
Reading the November issue of Preview (with KC Concepcion in sultry form amidst what looks like her Midnight in Paree on its cover), albeit a borrowed copy from K, I saw it again: the day bag by Sofia Coppola for Louis Vuitton, hence called ultimately the SC bag. The news: the filmmaker-Marc Jacobs gal pal is back with her namesake calf leather bag in an old and a new sizes and colored with her one-off favorite shade with a different-hued edges for her coup with her favorite Paris department store.

The first encounter: it was an article in April issue of Preview magazine (on the cover: the olive-skinned vamp then-college senior Isabelle Daza) where I had my eyes fixed (and my heart skipped a beat) for the first time on a bag.

Prior to that encounter, I had told my college girl friends, many times, the details of how my kind of bag would be like :

  • shoulder straps for carrying it like a gym bag or to just sling the bag over my shoulders like a book bag
  • handle so I can also carry it like a la Doña or Serena van der Woodsen
  • something I can stash all my things in
  • looks luxe

I couldn't find department store versions of what I dreamt up. That was circa 07-08 when the world wasn't that much into social media yet compared to the ruckus/hoolabaloo in this new decade.

First available in 2009, the city bag has been the realization of Sofia Coppola's dream LV bag.
LVoe at first sight

Call it a Sofia foresight. Some time later, I saw modest copycats (with a little tweak here or there) of the bag in various online shops.
Since then the SC bag has seen light in different sizes (for one, in Small or PM for petite modele) and delectable colors.
This year, the filmmaker collaborated with her favorite Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche with a special edition SC bag: a version in calfskin leather that comes in two sizes (PM, and the new smaller one, BB) and in cobalt blue and  trimmed with florescent fuchsia.
Yet I still cannot cough up $$$MyMotherIsAScamQueen.
Hey, blue or black?

K, back to screening "Dior and I".
